MY STORY

Early years

I grew up in the ’90s and ’00s in a small town in Bulgaria, surrounded by geography encyclopedias, obsessed with maps, and hooked on travel documentaries. There was no YouTube, so I had to watch whatever random TV programmes were on and rely mostly on my imagination. I never quite understood how people could spend their entire lives in one place — I knew I needed to move and see as much of the world as I could with my own eyes. At 18, I went to university in the UK and spent an exchange year in France. As a student, I didn’t have the means to travel much, but it still gave me a taste of what I was craving — and those cravings only grew stronger with time..

Life after Uni

I was lucky enough to find a good job straight after graduating from university and moved to Vienna 📍. Over the next 10 years, I managed to travel regularly, averaging 8–10 trips a year and covering most of Europe in depth. I’ve always had a strong affinity for the south of the continent, where I spent perhaps 80% of my time travelling 🙂. I also managed to fit in a few long-distance trips to Southeast Asia, visiting Thailand, India, Singapore, and Malaysia. But this was never enough — I knew I had to go all-in and fulfill my longstanding dream..

A Millenial's semi-midlife crisis

I decided it was finally time to take the long East Asia solo trip I had envisioned for years. Since a sabbatical wasn’t an option, I quit my job and, in February 2025, set off on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. I spent five months on the road, planning as I went, and took my time exploring the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan. It was the perfect mix of planning and spontaneity, and I had the time of my life. Along the way, I realised I’m pretty f*cking good at organising, and that I could use those skills to help others maximise their enjoyment of travel. That’s how the idea for LowkeyTrips was born.
